These rooms have been named the “Leverton Rooms” as a tribute to Mrs Leverton for the 8 years that she devoted to Glade Primary. Thank you for all the parents, governors, contractors and staff who attended our celebration ceremony.
Guitar Showcase Our Year 5 pupils have been learning to play the guitar this term with Mrs Robinson, Mr Crouch and Mr Spooner from the Redbridge Music Service. They demonstrated their skill and talents this morning in 2 showcase assemblies. We would like to thank staff for their commitment and hard work supporting our pupils this term.
Christmas Lunch Once again, we enjoyed our annual Christmas lunch. The children and staff enjoyed our seasonal celebration together.
Christmas Ball - 3.45-5.15pm today
The Ball is tonight after school. Tickets have been distributed to all the children who have paid in advance. Any children wanting to attend and haven’t yet paid can turn up and pay on the door. KS1 children must be escorted by an adult during the whole session. I would like to thank PAWS for all their hard work this term and for their continued commitment to raising funds to support children at Glade.
Deputy Head Teacher at Glade Following interviews this week we are delighted to announce that Mr. Miller has been successfully appointed as the permanent Deputy Head Teacher at Glade.
Money coming into School Please ensure that all money coming into school is placed in a clearly marked envelope as it gets very confusing for staff and loose money can easily get lost, especially when teachers are busy in the mornings and money gets handed to them directly.
Tesco Carol Singing Our school choir will be singing carols at Tesco, Charlie Brown’s tomorrow from 2pm, so if you are shopping please pop in and give them some moral support. They will also be giving us a taste of their talents next Thursday after school.
Mid—Term Reports These will go out on Monday 13th December. Class 5F will be given their reports by Friday 17th due to Mr. Fraser’s absence this week.
Late Pick Up of Children Please pick your children up at 3.30pm. The office staff are not insured to look after children and they finish at 3.45pm. If you pick up late you will be charged.

CHILDREN IN NEED
Cake Sale
The children in Year 5 will be selling cakes tomorrow for Children in Need. If your child would like to purchase one please send them into school with 20p or 50p. Thank you.
Sleepover
Children participating in the Children in Need Sleepover on Friday 19th November should arrive at school from 7pm at the Nursery gate. Please ensure that your child is collected by 8 am on Saturday morning—20.11.10.
As in previous years we will be working hard to raise money for the Children in Need Appeal.
Lunch Boxes
Please make sure that all lunch boxes are clearly marked with your child’s name and class as lots of them are very similar and this causes much confusion if they are without a name.
School Dinner Menu
Just to inform you that there will be a slight adjustment to the school lunch menu. It will affect Week 2 roast chicken meal. We will now be serving a chicken drumstick as opposed to chicken breast meat on this day.
Year 2 Science Museum Trips
Our Year 2 classes both had a wonderful time when they went to the Science Museum this week. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves including the adventure of going by train!
Redbridge Schools Swimming Gala
We wish all the swim team good luck today as they compete in the annual Redbridge Schools Swimming Gala. We will update you next week about how they get on.
Christmas Dinner Day—9th December
Your child should have brought home a letter yesterday about Christmas lunch. We will need to have all replies back by Friday 26th November as the cook needs to pre-order the food. Without a reply by this date your child will have to have a packed lunch or else go home for lunch on 9th. Thank you.
Raffle Tickets
Please promote our school raffle this year. The PAWS group have managed to gather some really great prizes. Please support our school.
School Development
We are working on the Nursery garden at the moment and making much needed improvements so that we can link with the new Reception classes. We are having additional “soft play” laid and have created extra play areas by removing the over-grown shrubs. The Nursery and Reception teams are working closely together to improve the outdoor play area and have got lots of exciting ideals for future developments.
Reminder
Please remember that the school day ends at 3.30pm and the children should be collected promptly at 3.30. An increasing number of children are being collected much later than 3.30pm which means that the office staff also have to work late. The school does have a Late Collection Charge Policy and this will be implemented if the same children are collected late on more than 2 occasions.

Maria Sohail’s Culture Poem:
The Cultures in our World,
As different as they are,
From every corner of the earth,
They come from near and far.
Given by our fore-fathers,
From birth in the womb,
Stays with us forever,
Until death in the tomb.
It is not religion at all,
Nor is it fact,
Our traditions and our ways,
Is what keeps us intact.
We all have our cultures,
That we should remember,
Londoner’s yes we are,
Each a significant member.

We will update you on the progress.
Activities Fair - Tuesday 28th September 2010 Once again we will be running an Activities Fair in the main hall for parents and pupils to attend to find out about local Arts, Drama and Sports Clubs. This will be open to parents from 3pm and then after school for parents and pupils.
Attendance and Punctuality Please make sure your child arrives at school on time each morning and that they regularly attend. If your child is going to be absent please report this to the school office as early as possible on the first day of the absence.
Leave of Absence Requests All new parents please note:
Pupils attend school for a maximum of 190 days each academic year. Full attendance is vital for your child’s educational progress. The school regards absences as a very serious concern and there is an overwhelming connection between those students who are frequently absent and those who go on to underachieve in examinations. The school will only grant leave in term time in the most exceptional circumstances.
Leave taken without permission of the Head Teacher will be recorded as unauthorised, and you may be liable to a Penalty Notice resulting in a £100 fine. (Reduces to £50 if paid within 28 days).
Extended leave may result in your child being removed from the school roll.
Zumba Classes These dance classes are now running every Monday afternoon from 4-5pm. Parents are welcome to attend. The cost of each lesson is £5 for the hour and can be paid weekly. We do not however have a crèche facility but you can book your child into the after school club for the hour at a cost of £4 each week.

Welcome back, I hope you all had a good break and are back rested and ready for the busy Summer term!
Flight Delays Fortunately, we have only had 4 members of staff affected by the recent flight restrictions; Mrs. Leverton in Italy, Mr. Clarkson in Poland, Mrs. Grant in Thailand and Miss Willers in New Zealand. Thankfully, Mrs. Leverton and Mr. Clarkson are now safely back home.
6W will be covered by Miss Porter and the usual Year 6 team, and other staff duties and responsibilities have been covered within the school team. We have 10 families also affected by the travel restrictions but overall there has been little or no disruption to the school.
Nursery Hours From September 2010 all pre-school children are entitled to 15 hours of Nursery education a week. This will have an impact on our Nursery hours as all children will be allocated 3 hours Nursery provision a day. With this in mind the Foundation stage team have got together to plan for the next academic year looking at timings, staffing, the new Reception building and equipping a shared outdoor area. After lengthy discussions, taking in to account the needs of pupils and the smooth functioning of the school we propose changing the Nursery hours as follows:
Morning
Start now—9.05am changing to 8.45am from Sept 2010.
End 11.35am now, changing to 11.45am from Sept 2010.
Afternoon
Start 12.55pm now, changing to 12.30pm from Sept 2010.
End 3.25pm now, changing to 3.30pm from Sept 2010.
Please note that this will take effect from Sept 2010. We are consulting parents views on these changes and welcome any comments.
Year 1 Multi Sports Competition If your child took part in this event last term and you have not yet returned the kit please do so as soon as possible. Thank you.
Reminder PAWS Non-Uniform Day Don’t forget this is tomorrow for St. Georges Day. Please come to school dressed in a red and white theme, donations of £1 please.

Reception—Tues 4th May. These sessions are held in the classroom at 8.30am.
Parent Workshops We are having a Literacy Workshop session on Tuesday 27th April 2010. This session will be run by Ms. Patel and Mrs. Sheikh and will run from 9.15am—10.15am. It will be an introduction and training session on phonics—letters and sounds.
There will then be a session from 11am-12pm and this will be based on “How to Read More Effectively” and will be of particular interest to current parent readers.

Drinking Water As the weather begins to improve and we have hotter days please note that we have facilities in school for fresh drinking water. In each class there is a tap for drinking water. Your child can also bring in a bottle of water which they can keep in the classroom (separate from the packed lunch drink). We also have drinking fountains in the playground and near the field.
Measles, Chicken pox and Shingles Please inform the school office immediately if your child is suffering from any of the above. We have a child in school who is currently receiving treatment for cancer and so it is very important that we know so that we can inform the family straight away as this could affect the treatment. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.

Non-Uniform Day Don’t forget this is tomorrow— 12th February wearing red—for Valentines Day. A PAWS fund raising event, £1 donation please.
China Week This has been an exciting and eventful week for all the children. Each class has been involved in a project linked to one of the animals from the Chinese zodiac.
We have also experienced Tai Chi and Calligraphy lessons and tomorrow we invite all the parents to join us for the whole school exercise at 8.55am—weather permitting.
Beijing Link On Monday, Glade Primary took part in a link video conference with other schools in London, the UK and China. This event was opened by the Redbridge Mayor, Mayor Chan, who is the first Chinese Mayor in Britain. Our pupils demonstrated their Chinese exercise routine and participated in a question and answer session with other schools. This was both a technical and educational feat and one that we are very proud to be involved in.
Wider Opportunity Concert at Town Hall This evening at 7pm a group of our Year 5 pupils will be playing their guitars in a concert at the Town Hall in Ilford. They have already performed for the school and have demonstrated their talent and skill with the guitar in such a short period of time.
We thank their guitar teachers Rico and Victoria for all their hard work and are sorry to hear that this is Rico’s last week with us.
Sainsbury’s Active Kids These vouchers are starting from 17th February. Please collect them for us and bring in to school as they really do help in ensuring that we get extra P.E. equipment for our children.
Open Evening Reminder Don’t forget! Appointments are tonight for Reception, Years 1,2,3,4 and 6. Please try to be on time for your meetings so that the evening can run smoothly. Thank you.
Punctuality Due to a decline in pupil’s punctuality the Education Welfare Service will be commencing ’Late Gate’ patrols. Please make sure your child is in school and lined up for 8.55am.
Finally, may I wish you all a great half-term holiday. See you on the 22nd February when school resumes.

Parent Governor Vacancy We still have a vacancy. If anyone is interested please contact Mrs Walsh for further information.
Swimming Gala The Swimming team gave a tremendous performance at the Redbridge Mini Games Gala last week. The team exceeded their personal best times and achieved many top 12 placings, out of the 24 schools participating.
Glade gained 5th position overall, with the boys Freestyle Relay team achieving 3rd place.
Unfortunately, due to the gala running late, both the boys and girls Medley Relay events were cancelled. This was a real disappointment to the team as both our Medley teams had trained specifically for this event. Both teams were expected to do very well and would have put us in a higher position overall.
However, with the timeless and unbeatable support of our parents/carers/supporters the team are eagerly awaiting our last event and are back in training for the Redbridge Primary Schools Gala on Thursday 11th March 2010 at 1.45pm, Fullwell Cross Pool.
Reducing Paper As previously mentioned, by September 2010 we have to reduce all the hard copies of letters that come out to parents. Please therefore, check our website at regular intervals for information as we gradually try to reduce what is sent out to parents.
Reminder—Height and Weight Checks Please note that next Monday, 8th February Year 6 and Reception children are having height and weight checks in school. If you do not wish your child to be included in this please write in to the school office as soon as possible. Thank you.
Parent Meetings Just a reminder, Year 5 parents meetings Wednesday 10th February. Reception, Yrs 1,2,3,4,6 Thursday 11th February.
Internet Safety Please be vigilant when your children are on the computer, particularly if they are using social networking sites, such as “face book” and MSN. You may be aware that there is a minimum age limit of 13 on some sites and we advise that you exert the usual parental control. It has come to our attention that some children are misusing this facility at home and causing upset to others in school.
Non-Uniform Day Friday 11th February wearing red—for Valentines Day.
Year 1 Parents of children in Year 1 can we please ask for your consideration in the mornings. The lines are getting very congested and it can be difficult for staff to get the children in to school safely. Once your child has joined the line we ask that you step away and wave your child goodbye as they enter school. It is not necessary for you to come in to school with your child, the staff are there to support the children and encourage independence with bags and coats.
PAWS Group Thank you to all our parents who are members of the PAWS group. They all dedicate their time to raise money for the benefit of our children at Glade. We particularly want to mention those members who took a leading role last year and want to thank them for their year of office. The membership has changed following the AGM meeting. We now have:
Chair—Sammie Canning
Treasurer—Michelle McGovern
Secretary— Shaheen Mahmood
